Me
4.
¿me
Gracias
profe por su tiempo.
Good
morning my name is Mayerly Paola Vega, undergraduate student in mathematics of
the national university open distance UNAD
I
meet the lic. Jairo Antonio Paternina talks about the history of mathematics,
about the civilization of Mesopotamia and its contribution to mathematics.
Profe,
very many days and thank you for accepting the interview.
1. Profe to which we refer with Babylonian
mathematics?
Babylonian
mathematics refers to the mathematics developed in Mesopotamia, present-day
Iraq, from the first days of life, to the beginning of the Hellenistic period.
They are called Babylonian mathematics as the central role of Babylon as a
place of study, which has ceased to exist during the Hellenistic period. From
this point, Babylonian mathematics was founded with Greek and Egyptian
mathematics to give rise to Hellenistic mathematics. Later, under the Arab
Empire, Mesopotamia, especially Baghdad, became an important center of study
for Islamic mathematics.
2. Profe, what year would you basically be talking
about mathematics in Babylon? And how are these preserved in time?
The
knowledge about mathematics in Babylon is derived from more than 400 clay
tablets unveiled since 1850. Cut into cuneiform script, they were engraved
while the clay was wet and then baked in an oven or dried in the sun. Some of
them seem to be graduated assignments.
3. There is currently some kind of evidence about
these findings. What was that significant contribution of the Sumerians?
The
earliest evidence of written mathematics dates back to the ancient Sumerians,
who constituted the primitive civilization in Mesopotamia. The Sumerians
developed a complex system of metrology from 3000 BC. C.
From
around 2500 a. C. onwards, the Sumerians wrote multiplication tables on clay
tablets and treated geometrical exercises and division problems. The earliest
signs of the Babylonian numerals also date from that period
4. Could I better mention the contributions with usual
words of mathematical language?
Fractions,
algebra, quadratic and cubic equations and the calculation of reciprocal
regular twin cousins, multiplication tables and methods to solve linear
equations and quadratic equations, the classification of numbers, the
sexagesimal numbering system in base 60. Hence, it derives the division of one
minute in 60 seconds and one hour in 60 minutes, as well as that of a circle in
360 degrees and the sexagesimal subdivisions of this unit of measure of angles
in minutes and seconds.
With
all this, the Babylonians made great contributions to the history of
mathematics and are nowadays a base for the teaching and learning of them.
Thank
you teacher for your time.
